Witkem House

bundle of joy

On May 28th, this little nugget joined the family. We are beyond excited to meet her in person but are so happy to get to experience her life through pictures in the meantime (technology is amazing). Us Witkem ladies are overjoyed to be the Brooklyn aunts (technically cousins, I guess, but we will be considering her our niece) and can’t wait for when she’s old enough to come down and spend a couple weeks with us in the summer. We have big plans! She is one fortunate little lady to have been born into two families that are filled with a whole lotta love. She also has two amazing parents who are going to guide and nurture her into being a truly wonderful person. Welcome to the world and family, JoSi!! We can’t wait to show you around.

Much of today was spent covered in dirt & sweat - summer has arrived! I potted a bunch of plants (tomatoes, basil, & a flower!), and gathered up the glass, tile shards, and bits of trash the were exposed by the rain from last week.

Our awesome northside neighbors are sprucing up their deck! They told us they’re planning on having lots of potted plants, so pretty soon we’ll have an even nicer view. More good news - our ivy seems to have survived our assault on it’s roots!

In a few weeks I’m going to Korea to perform. I was contacted by the dance company back in March when I was in the thick of my project at Arts@Renaissance, and for a little while I wasn’t totally sure it would happen. I was pretty burned out…

On Saturday I was informed that in addition to the the full evening of dancing and aerial that I’ve been rehearsing, I will also be performing a silks solo. So it’s crunch time. I’m exhausted from the weekend, but I had to rehearse tonight. This is a tiny excerpt - maybe 1/6th of the whole thing. There’s a lot of work to do on the transitions of this piece. And then there’s the whole stamina thing - I’ll basically be doing about 30 minutes of aerial without a break.

I do love a challenge.

I got this text & photo from Joe as I was leaving rehearsal tonight: “This is for the house blog, for sure.” That photo nearly made me skip the Second Dan reunion show, but I went. It was a seriously tough decision. This week has been all about old and new music. Last night I heard The Barr Brothers and Brian McKnight (not at the same time)…tonight The Kin went on after Second Dan and were so good I stayed despite being crazy tired. On Sunday we’re clearing out the yard - if you want to help out just show up! We’ll feed you. -ky

tidbits

It’s raining & dreary.  The rose is still alive, but it’s too soon to tell…

Maybe this will perk up the day!

digging

This weekend I finally started digging up plants in the garden.  The rose that bloomed this winter is now in a pot and I’m hoping it wil survive the move.  There are piles of broken cement buried under about a foot of dirt in our yard, and three of the roots had burrowed deep into crevices between the cement - at a certain point I had to cut them.  In addition to the pieces of cement, I discovered a lot of glass, the sole of a shoe, and half a toy gun.  Austin planted his hops (Witkem beer is his future project).

I decided to move a few of the already potted plants to the front.  From left to right: Lewis, Sacagawea, Clark:

This coming Sunday we’re going to start clearing everything out to make way for the leveling and then the flagstone.  If anyone wants to help, just show up.  We’ll feed you well.
